Alums celebrate at 71st Emmy Awards

West 鈥73 takes home Emmy for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking for 鈥楻BG鈥

At the 71st Annual Emmy Awards, actors from acclaimed television shows shed their costumes to join writers, directors and other creatives 鈥 among them Brown alums 鈥 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.


University alums鈥 accomplishments were celebrated in numerous categories, including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie and Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special.


At the Creative Arts Emmy Awards last Sunday, 鈥淩BG,鈥 a film co-directed and produced by Betsy West 鈥73, took the award for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking. After the win, West tweeted a video of herself and co-director Julie Cohen planking on the Emmys stage, referencing Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg鈥檚 exceptional exercise routine. West was also nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program.


Assistant Professor of Visual Arts RaMell Ross was also nominated for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking for his film, 鈥淗ale County This Morning, This Evening.鈥


鈥淔osse/Verdon,鈥 executive produced and written by Steven Levenson 鈥06, received four awards, including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, as well as 17 nominations. Levenson, who partnered with Broadway powerhouses Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail and Alex Lacamoire to produce the show, received a nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special. , Levenson discussed finding his love of writing during his third year at the University 鈥 a revelation that spring-boarded his career, propelling him toward a Tony Award and Emmy nominations.


鈥淲hen I discovered this idea that you could write in somebody else鈥檚 voice, that was really electrifying to me,鈥 Levenson told Playbill.


Marin Hinkle 鈥88, nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for portraying Rose Weissman in 鈥淭he Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,鈥 applauded her castmate, Alex Borstein, who won the category for her portrayal of Midge Maisel鈥檚 manager Susie. Describing Borstein as 鈥渦napologetic鈥 and 鈥渋nspirational,鈥 Hinkle reflected on the strength she witnesses in her colleague .


Aunjanue Ellis 鈥93 was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for portraying Sharonne Salaam in 鈥淲hen They See Us.鈥 Laura Linney 鈥86 received a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for playing Wendy Byrde in 鈥淥zark.鈥


鈥淭he Handmaid鈥檚 Tale,鈥 executive produced and written by Bruce Miller 鈥87, received 11 total nominations and won three awards. Miller was nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. 鈥淧ose,鈥 executive produced by Nina Jacobson 鈥87 P鈥23, received six nominations and one award. 鈥淏lack-ish,鈥 produced by Jonathan Groff 鈥83 and starring Tracee Ellis Ross 鈥94, received two nominations.


While West will be the only alum to personally take home an Emmy award this season, the other seven University community members nominated for awards were also celebrated for their work yesterday evening.
