Letter: Respecting and appreciating differences in responding to war

To the Editor:

Among Brown鈥檚 attributes has been the community鈥檚 ability to respect and appreciate our differences. I would consider this to be a signature asset for Brown, which is now being tested as the University community responds to the war between Israel and Hamas. There鈥檚 tragedy on both sides of this war. Our natural response at times like this is to assign blame and exert anger. However, a university, maybe Brown in particular, is a place to listen, to reach out, to respect and to understand. This is a test for Brown, a test of whether the community has the ability to reach out or will it split apart. I would like to see Brown as a place that prioritizes respect and understanding even when it鈥檚 difficult, and serves as an example to others.
